Xeric Cyanobacterial Habitat Saudi Arabia

Breathing building blocks of the desert

Xeric Cyanobacterial Habitat is a concept for carbon dioxide removal in desert regions. Cyanobacteria are photosynthesising organisms, ubiquitous on earth. Biological desert crusts are home to these microorganisms in the area. The project explores designing of microhabitats for the organisms on untouched built surfaces in xeric environment. Building exteriors, retrofitted with panels of sand and hydrogel composite with cyanobacteria, is a way to reintroduce cyanobacteria back in nature and can aid in mitigating heat due to global warming.
