Carotenoids are competent scavengers of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their antioxidant property is attributed to their chemical structure. Based on the number of conjugated double bond and carbon chain length the haloarchaeal pigments are far superior to plant carotenoids. The pigments from haloarchaea largely C50 bacterioruberins having advanced ROS scavenging property. The keratinocytes are the epidermal layer of skin and are most prone to the detrimental effects of ROS. In this concept the very high protective antioxidant effect of the C50 bacterioruberin extracts on HaCaT cell lines.
